Health Risks of Asbestos.
Asbestos is a generic term used to refer to fibrous silicate minerals. The many useful properties of asbestos have made it a popular building material.
Dismantling and working with asbestos-containing building materials releases asbestos fibres into the air which, if inhaled, can accumulate in the lungs. The fibres are too small to be seen with the naked eye. They also have no odour. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to conditions such as asbestosis, lung cancer and pleural diseases as long as 10 to 30 years after exposure.
